Subject: sandy ice f=0.71, 1 of 2
The first image here is a compilation that gives a good overview of the general appearance of the sample and the phase distribution. Note that it's dense and lacks the isolated macropores along the ice/sand grain contacts that are so prevalent in the deformed samples. I looked hard for grain boundaries in the ice phase here but found none, even after the sublimation trick.

This batch is from a different section. The first picture is a composite overview. The second (4A) is a bit closer view, and you can see an area near the top-left portion of the image where a large qtz grain was plucked from. That area is expanded in 4B. I thought maybe the faint lines were grain boundaries, but on closer inspection (4C and 4E)) they likely are not [webmeister will post the photos later...]
